Project Summary
Developed by Dr. Gretchen Birbeck in Zambia and since successfully applied to Malawi, this program offers a valuable model for neurological service support in countries with an absence or shortage of neurologists.[1]

The 2008 World Neurology Foundation effort is focused on helping fund an African Regional Center of Excellence in the Neuropsychiatric Sciences in Lusaka, Zambia. This Center will offer full neurologic, psychiatric and neurosurgical services and training for the southern African regions as well as training and research opportunities for nurses, clinical officers, medical students, residents/registrars, attending physicians and scientists from other regions. Zambia’s location and range of tropical conditions allows it serve as an ideal location for academic exchange within Southern Africa and with the West. The Center will eventually be able to accommodate students and scholars from more developed regions who are interesting in studying tropical neurosciences, particularly from an operations perspective. Both biomedical and operational research is included in the ultimate goals.
